A “suspicious payment” suspension on GMC almost always relates to your Google Ads payment profile - not how your customers pay you. Google’s billing risk engine flagged a transaction or pattern on your account, and the suspension cascades to GMC because the two systems share an identity layer.

Common triggers:

  • A previous chargeback on your Google Ads invoice that wasn’t resolved
  • A failed payment that wasn’t retried
  • A recently changed billing address that doesn’t match the verification documents on file
  • A new payment method that doesn’t match the business legal entity name
  • Use of a prepaid card or virtual card that Google’s risk engine flags as higher-risk
  • Currency / country mismatch between the Ads payment profile and the GMC business country

The reinstatement playbook

Step 1: Resolve any outstanding billing balance

Visit Google Ads → Billing → Summary. If there’s any unpaid amount, declined charge, or chargeback in dispute, resolve it before doing anything else. The suspension won’t lift while a billing flag remains active.

Step 2: Verify your payment profile matches your business

The payment profile must show:

  • The legal business name (matches your GMC business info, your Shopify store details, and your business registration)
  • The legal business address (matches WHOIS, GMC, and Shopify)
  • A valid tax ID (VAT, EIN, SIRET, etc.) for your jurisdiction
  • A primary payment method that’s not a prepaid card

If anything is mismatched, update the payment profile and wait 24 hours for Google’s verification system to re-process.

Step 3: Add a backup payment method

Google’s risk engine treats accounts with a single payment method as higher-risk than accounts with two verified methods. Adding a second card or bank account typically reduces the risk score within 48 hours.

Step 4: Provide identity verification if requested

Some suspicious-payment cases will trigger a manual identity check - Google asks for:

  • Government-issued ID of the business owner
  • Business registration certificate
  • Recent utility bill or bank statement at the business address

Submit these via the Google Ads payment verification form, not via the GMC reapplication form.

Step 5: Wait for re-verification, then reapply

Once the payment profile is clean, the GMC suspension typically lifts within 5-7 business days without an explicit reapplication. If it doesn’t, request review with a brief note referencing the resolved billing case ID.

When the suspension persists

If the payment profile is verified clean and the suspension still doesn’t lift:

  • Check whether the suspension is actually a linked-account flag misclassified as suspicious-payment (different playbook - see linked-account guide)
  • Contact Google Ads payment support directly (the GMC support team can’t unlock billing-side flags)
  • For repeat triggers: consider switching to a business credit card from a major issuer with positive payment history

Start a free scan - we’ll cross-validate your payment profile identity against your Shopify, GMC, and WHOIS records and surface every mismatch.
