A linked-account suspension is one of the more frustrating types: your store may be perfectly compliant, but Google’s identity layer matched it to a different account that was previously suspended - and your account inherited the flag.
Common linkage signals Google’s review engine uses:
- Email overlap: same email registered on both accounts (even if for different roles)
- Payment profile overlap: same credit card or bank account on both
- IP fingerprint: same office network, same VPN egress
- Domain registration: same registrant or registrar contact email
- Phone number: same number on the GBP, the Shopify account, or the GMC contact info
- Tax / business registration ID: same VAT, SIRET, EIN
Two accounts sharing one signal usually doesn’t trigger the cascade. Two accounts sharing three or more signals usually does.
Two reinstatement paths
Path A: Reinstate the originally suspended account first
If the linked account is yours (e.g., a previous business you owned, a side project, a client account you managed), the cleanest path is:
- Identify which account is the original suspension
- Run that account through a full reinstatement playbook (see misrepresentation guide or the suspension type that applied)
- Once the original is reinstated, the linked-account flag on yours is usually lifted automatically within 7-14 days
This works because the linked-account suspension is downstream of the originating suspension. Fix the source, the cascade unwinds.
Path B: Prove genuine separation
If the linked account belongs to someone else - a partner, a sibling, a former business partner, an unrelated business at the same office - you’ll need to document the separation:
- Business registration documents showing your entity is independent
- Statement of relationship (or non-relationship) signed and dated
- Bank statements showing distinct payment profiles
- Updated identity reconciliation: change every shared signal you control (use a dedicated email for GMC, a dedicated payment profile, a separate phone) - Google’s identity layer needs to see the divergence on next crawl, not just hear about it
The Cross-System Identity Reconciliation flow in our Recovery panel automates this audit and surfaces every shared signal that needs to be split.
DSA channel
For EU merchants, linked-account suspensions are eligible for the EU DSA out-of-court appeal. Particularly valuable when:
- You can prove genuine non-relationship via independent documentation
- Google’s automated identity layer made an error (e.g., shared coworking IP)
- The originating account was wrongly suspended and is itself in dispute
DSA reviewers can consider documentation that Google’s internal AI-adjudicator may have weighted incorrectly.
When reinstatement is unlikely
If the linked account is:
- Yours (different LLC, same person)
- And was permanently suspended for a serious reason (counterfeit, repeated misrepresentation, circumventing systems)
Reinstating the new account while the old one remains permanently suspended is procedurally very difficult. The realistic path is to consult a specialized agency before opening a new account, to ensure the new entity has genuinely independent identity signals from the start.
