If you sell in a regulated category - healthcare, pharma, finance, insurance, alcohol, gambling, or weapons - Google requires specific certifications and disclosures before products can run on Shopping or Free Listings.
A “regulated categories” suspension typically means one of three things:
- You’re selling regulated goods without the required Google certification on your account
- The certification expired or your store details changed in a way that requires recertification
- The product listings don’t include the required disclosures (age verification, jurisdiction availability, prescription requirements)
Per-category certification map
Healthcare / pharma
- Online pharmacy certification required (NABP-accredited or country-equivalent)
- Prescription drugs need a Google Ads pharmacy program enrollment
- OTC medication needs disclosure of active ingredients + dosage in product titles
- Restricted in many jurisdictions - geographic targeting required
Alcohol
- Country-by-country eligibility - US, UK, EU, AU each have different rules
- Age-gating required on every PDP (verifiable, not a self-declared checkbox)
- Trade certificate (TTB for US, equivalent abroad) must be on file with Google
Finance / lending / crypto
- Crypto: registered with regulators in target market (FinCEN US, FCA UK, MAS SG, etc.)
- Personal loans: APR disclosure on every product
- Insurance: licensed in target jurisdictions, license number displayed in footer
Gambling / fantasy sports
- License required per target market
- Age-gating + responsible gambling resources linked from PDP
- Geographic targeting strict
Weapons
- Most weapons categories outright prohibited
- Restricted accessories (e.g., scopes, holsters) need specific compliance documentation
The reinstatement playbook
Step 1: Identify which category triggered. The suspension reason will sometimes name it; if not, audit your catalog against the regulated lists.
Step 2: Apply for the relevant Google certification (if not already held). This is the slowest step - 7 to 28 business days depending on category.
Step 3: Update product listings with the required disclosures, age-gating, and geographic restrictions.
Step 4: Update your business information in GMC to include the certification reference numbers.
Step 5: Wait 48 hours for Google to verify, then request review.
Restricted-category note for Auto-Fix users
If you use GMC Guardian’s AI Feed Optimizer, regulated categories are automatically forced into Validate mode regardless of your plan. Auto-pilot is disabled for healthcare, pharma, finance, insurance, gambling, alcohol, and weapons because the legal compliance burden on rewrites in these categories falls on the merchant, not on the optimizer.
You’ll see a clear disclaimer in the admin when this kicks in. Every suggestion is shown for explicit approval - never auto-pushed.
